Self-Insemination / DIY Insemination Facts, Information, Procedures

Some female fertility solutions do not require intervention through medical procedures. Self-Insemination of semen from a willing donor is simple in practice, and can be done at home with the help of a male or female partner, or even by yourself.

Do It Yourself / DIY Insemination or Self Insemination, is a method in which the woman, either alone or with the help of her partner,  inserts semen into the vagina without medical help.

Do It Yourself / DIY Insemination or Self Insemination is a useful technique:

1.
for couples with sexual dysfunction, such as an inability to consummate the marriage because of impotence or vaginismus
2.
when the husband cannot perform sexual intercourse for any reason on the fertile days
3.
For surrogates on behalf of heterosexual or homosexual couples
4.
for single women or lesbians.

It is surprisingly easy to learn how to successfully inseminate a willing subject, but because most women know so little about their own intimate and reproductive anatomy, most are very uncomfortable about attempting it. This brief guide should help you with the basics of Do It Yourself / DIY Insemination or Self Insemination, but the only way to learn is by doing practice. You can also ask a sympathetic doctor for help and he or she may be able to guide you in the beginning. Some couples may get turned off by the idea, because it is so clinical, with a little bit of imagination, and your partner's cooperation, you can even make it a bonding experience, if not a highly sexual one!

What is Needed for Do It Yourself / DIY Insemination or Self Insemination of Semen / Sperm

The most important ingredient, of course, is a freshly ejaculated semen sample! Ask your husband / male partner or other willing donor to ejaculate in a clean glass or plastic container. Make sure this is wide-mouthed, so it's easier for him to aim accurately. You don't want any of it to spill out! Sometimes getting a semen sample can be difficult. Many men are unable to achieve an erection and masturbate to a climax ‘on command’ and some encouragement may be necessary. Pornography of the man’s choice, sexual foreplay, mutual masturbation and / or the use of sex toys may help. The important thing is the production of semen, and if the end result is a viable pregnancy then this stage must not be rushed. If the sperm donor fails to ejaculate the must be no embarrassment, and the mantra must be ‘relax, take your time, try again when you feel ready’.

You can also use a frozen semen sample from a sperm bank, after allowingit to thaw at room temperature.

Performing a Do It Yourself / DIY Insemination or Self Insemination Procedure

Once you have your semen sample, you are now ready to perform the self insemination procedure. Ask your husband or partner to put on disposable gloves and then suck up the semen sample into a 10 ml sterile plastic disposable syringe - without a needle, of course. You can even use a turkey baster, which has become a legendary symbol of empowerment in the lesbian community, but the small amount of semen needed for fertilisation of the ovary does not require such a large instrument.

The semen sample now must be squirted deep into your vagina, and this is the tricky part. You need to lie on a bed, with your knees and thighs bent, and your knees wide apart, so that your husband / partner can see your vulva clearly. He / she then slowly guides the tip of the syringe into your vagina. This can be done just by feel, by gently inserting the left index finger into your vagina, and using this to guide the syringe which is in the right hand. The syringe should be inserted as far as possible without being uncomfortable. The barrel is then plunged, depositing the fresh semen into the vagina.

You may find it easier to lie on the edge of the bed, so that your hips protrude over the edge. Putting a pillow under your hips can make it easier for your husband / partner to perform the DIY semen insemination. You should remain lying on your back for about ten minutes afterwards, after which you can resume normal activity. Some of the semen may leak out of your vagina, but this is quite normal.

Do It Yourself / DIY Insemination or Self Insemination Using a Speculum

While using a medical grade vaginal speculum is not essential, it can help the DIY insemination process, because it makes it easier to more precisely inject the semen close to the mouth of the uterus/ cervix. You can use a disposable plastic speculum or a more expensive stainless steel speculum, and when you insert the speculum, make sure the blades are closed. You can slide it in upwards, or else sideways, turning it when it has been pushed all the way into your vagina. When the handles are above your pubic bone, squeeze them together, which will open your vaginal walls. You will hear a click when the speculum is locked open. If your husband / partner uses a torch, he / she will be able to see your cervix, which is round and pink with an opening in the middle. The mucus may appear as a clear bubble, or a thread like raw egg white. You can use a mirror to see what's going on for yourself, if you so desire! After the insemination, make sure that you release the handles and collapse the speculum blades before removing it from your vagina.

Do It Yourself / DIY Insemination or Self Insemination Using a Cervical Cup or Cap

Some women successfully use a cup or cap for self insemination. Rubber cervical caps are designed for contraception but they can be used for DIY semen insemination. There is also a cervical cup especially designed for insemination, which is slightly larger and more shallow, the name 'cup' indicating that it serves as a semen receptacle. You simply squat down, check the position of your cervix, and insert the cap containing the semen in that direction, holding it upright at all times. Check all around the top of your vagina to make sure that you didn't miss you cervix. The cup can be removed after several hours. Take care to break the suction by hooking a finger over the edge of it before trying to pull it out.

Getting the Timing Right for Do It Yourself / DIY Insemination or Self Insemination

Timing the DIY insemination procedure is extremely important, because you need to inseminate during your fertile period. Since you ovulate 14 days before your next period is due, the fertile time is 14 to 18 days before your next period is due. Fortunately, it is quite easy to determine when you ovulate, and you can either monitor your cervical mucus, or use an ovulation prediction kit which is widely available online.

You should try to self inseminate 2 to 4 times in a month during your fertile period. You can inseminate daily if you like. The more inseminations you do in a cycle, the better your chances of success will be.

Please have realistic expectations of the chances of success. The chance of getting pregnant is about 10% per fertility cycle - and if you are not pregnant in 6 months, you may need to go to a doctor for additional assistance.
